Hey everyone! Now that school is back in session for those who are still in school (and the dread of being an "adult" and a graduate setting in for the rest of us), it's about time we have another discussion post!
This time, I want to know what the:
1. Best advice you received as a new musician/marching band member/guard member/etc.
2. Best advice you can give to a new musician/marching band member/guard member/ etc.
is, because that's really part of what makes the band experience for a lot of people: how openly new members are accepted in, whether it be by their section or the whole band.
Personally, the best advice I can give to new band kids is this: no one is perfect, and no one has the same skills, and there is no one set way to practice. Run scales and warm-ups if it works for you. If it doesn't, then find a book of etudes or a book of solos (my personal favorite is either a book of Disney solos or Fink's Studies in Legato for trombone) and work through a few of those. My favorite private instructor in college told me that there are quite a few pros that don't have all scales memorized, but it doesn't make or break a person or their chances. Find what you love, and go from there.
I can't wait to see what advice all of you have received and given!
